The Environment
As computers and other electronic devices fast become "throw
away items", many people have concerns about the large
numbers of chemicals and toxic materials that are present
in the modern PC that will finish their life in landfill sites
leaching their waste products into the earth. Although each
PC has minimal amounts of toxic materials inside, due to the
vast number of PC's being disposed of, they do have a real
impact on the environment. Many third world countries, who's
governments allow the rest of the world to dispose of their
waste on their territories, are already converting vast swathes
of their countries into wasteland. http://news.bbc.co.uk
Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations, it is now the responsibility of all original equipment manufacturer
to dispose of their own products once they become end of life. Therefore if
you have unwanted equipment to dispose of please contact the
original manufacturer as they should have recycling facilities already
in place.
In addition, as a retailer, we are obliged to dispose of any unwanted computer equipment when you purchase a new product from us, providing it's on a like for like basis. i.e. we can dispose of an old laptop when you purchase a new laptop and an old computer tower or monitor when you purchase these items.
The WEEE regulations are fairly complex, but if you would like to know more about them, the Environment Agency website is one of the easiest to understand. http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/topics/waste/32084.aspx
What Is ROHS?
The RoHS Directive stands for "the restriction of the
use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic
equipment". This Directive bans the placing on the EU
market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing
more than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent
chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated
diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants.
We try to ensure that all
sourced parts and equipment are compliant. For more information
on ROHS, see:

We care about the
world we are leaving for our children and feel that manufacturers,
retailers and the general public must take responsibility
for their actions regarding our environment. |
